Some Background: Since 1923, Soumei Lacquer Ware Store has been operating in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture in Japan. In the autumn of 2023 W.P.S.C travelled to Fukui to find the beautiful blue of 'Kyutaro Lacquerware' developed by the third and fourth generations of Soumei.
We have a collection of wooden bowls, cups, plates, boxes, trays and spoons all with a unique indigo blue lacquer.
The Indigo wooden bowls are hand turned from jujube wood by crafts people at the Soumei studio.
Jujube wood has strong insulation properties, making it ideal for hot and cold foods. The outside of the bowl is finished with a semi-transparent lacquer coating that leaves the wood grain visible.
The inside is painted with a transparent urethane coating that enhances the natural wood and protects it throughout it's life.
To complete each piece, the edges are finished with a crisp dark coating to protect and create their clean and sharp appearance.
Please note: the finished colour will vary depending on the base wood colour and wood grain.
Also, please note that there may be slight colour differences depending on the time of year when the craftspeople apply the lacquer in regards to the temperature and humidity of the day.
Indigo wooden tableware suits any table or dish, and can be used casually, they make for cute serving pieces.
It's better if the pieces don't go into the dishwasher, hand washing is preferred.
